Classic Auto Restorations

Doug Latham, founder and operator of English Auto USA has been restoring classic automobiles for over 40 years. His passion started as a young man when his older brothers drove the latest English sports cars home from the service. Once he obtained his driver’s license and had the option of driving brother Don’s XK140 Jaguar, brother David’s Mark II Austin Healy vs. his mother’s Ford LTD Wagon ~ that is all it took to ignite his long-term passion for British Automobiles.

In 1972 Doug formed the business English Auto USA. He worked in a small garage behind his home, summers and weekends to help subsidize his college education. Doug earned a BS degree from Springfield College in 1973. He moved to Searsport, Maine in 1974 and opened a one-car shop. Since then the demand for his services has steadily increased, and so has the number of services offered.

The shop was greatly expanded in 1984 and today is a one-stop, full-service restoration facility.

Doug is ASE certified and the facility is recognized by the State of Maine as a Certified State Inspection Station. Doug is also certified by the State of Maine and the EPA as a Paint Technician. The facility has been sanctioned by the Maine Safety Board.

Your site is great and the cars are beautiful! I’d love to see what you can do to put my 1962 Triumph TR3B back together someday…

      Sorry Jim,

We just completed the finish painting on the body shell and released it to the owner. Check out the slide show for pictures of the finished product in a few days.

Doug is the Man. What he doesn’t know about English sports cars isn’t worth knowing. He came to collect my dead-to-the-world BJ8 Healey and breathed new life into it. He did the work in stages as money was available, storing it while it awaited the next phase. And, jeesum, you should see it now. It’s the Healey Monster, a little green beast of a car. Cheers, Doug!

Do you do actual moving or just truck rentals?

If you mean trailering of cars, we often do that for restoration customers.
If you mean moving from your point a to your point B, probably not.

We do not rent any of our equipment.

I suggest you telephone Doug Latham at the contact number and explain what you would like to do.

Hi. Sam Shaw gave me your name. You restored his 1930 Dodge DH phaeton some time ago.
I am restoring a 1929 Dodge that apparently has the same top (same part numbers). Sam said you basically built his top. I’d be interested in talking to you about That project, what you had to start with, drawings, dimensions, etc.
I’m at Owls Head Museum tomorrow (Sunday) taking a look at that car.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Doug restored a 59 TR3 A for me in 1980. What a special car. He did a great job. I had to sell years later to put groceries on the table and make sure the kids got good educations. Sure wish I had it back now.
